The Ekkerøy trail

Experience one of Europe’s largest bird colonies, with over 50 different species and 40,000 nesting Black-Legged Kittiwakes. Ekkerøy has Finnmark’s only bird cliffs, with a drivable track virtually to the cliff-edge. From the car park, it’s just a 5-minute walk to the nature reserve and birdwatching spots.

Ekkerøy, itself, is a traditional fishing village 15 km east of Vadsø with an easy, waymarked walking trail to discover the island’s natural and cultural treasures as well as enjoying the fresh air and open skies.

If time is short, don’t miss the shorter 1.5 km loop with a series fascinating information panels along the trail highlighting the birds, wildlife, cultural heritage and history that make this place so special.

The longer 7-km loop takes you round the entire island, so if you have the time, do it! You won’t be disappointed!

Start: car park signposted from the road into Ekkerøy.

Distance: 1.5 km or 7 km loops

Conditions: Nice easy hike in open terrain.
