Nattfjelldalen hiking trail
The hike to Nattfjelldalen Gorge is an ideal alternative if you want a longer walk and the effort is well worth it as you get amazing views of Varangerfjord and the Varanger peninsula. On really clear days, you can see Russia and the Fisker peninsula, some 55 km south west of Vardø and east of Grense Jakobselv.
The waymarked trail takes you to Varanger National Park boundary and from here you can choose to descend into the gorge with its picturesque river and plentiful wildlife or skirt the northern rim and marvel at the spectacular waterfall at the head of the valley.
To get to Nattfjelldalen, drive from Vadsø towards the airport on the E75 and turn left at the junction with a motocross track. Continue for 4.8 km past the shooting range, cross-country skiing trail and Byvannet, until you reach a pumphouse where the trail begins. The various turns to reach the pumphouse are signposted along the track.
The walking trail crosses open, hilly countryside, which is popular with wading birds, hikers, berry-pickers and for walking dogs. There are also a group of wood cabins at halfway-point of the trail.
Start: Car park 4.8 km from the E75 at the junction with a motocross track in Vadsø before reaching the trailhead at the pumphouse.
Distance: 6 km one-way
Conditions: Extended half-day, or comfortable full-day hike.
